What We Seek

by Mikael Lewis

/

about

"What We Seek" is about pushing aside the negative influences and building on the positive. "The opening line states: "Feels like my time has come, to break the shackles, hit the ground and run". It is refreshingly optimistic.
Like most of my songs, What We Seek started as a guitar riff I thought was cool, but I actually had a hard time playing. I finished the song, then I put it on the shelf because it was difficult to play. Then one day it hit me that I'd written this beautiful song about overcoming adversity, then shelved it because I couldn't play it. I felt like such a hypocrite. Then I forced myself to practice until I could play it well and now it's one of my favorites.

lyrics

Feels like the time has come
To break the shackles, hit the ground and run
They tried to kill the passion
With blood and guts and sex and MTV

But that’s just not my style,
Not part of the plan
I’m gonna’ rise and take my stand

It’s no secret, this I know
What you seed is what will grow
Mysteries deep and words profound
Can never match a heart on fire,
Or a soul that’s reaching higher

Feels like the time is here
To shatter molds and shake my fist at fear
They tried to quell the fervor
With food and pills and tribes and circuses

But that’s just not my scene,
Not part of my game
I’m gonna’ stand and take my aim

It’s no secret; this I know
What you seek is what will grow
Mysteries deep and words profound
Can never match a heart on fire,
Or a soul that’s reaching higher

It’s no secret that I’ve found
What is simple is profound
Mysteries deep and words unknown
Can never match a heart on fire,
Or a mind that’s reaching higher
